Virginia Vigil was born on December 31, 1940, in Anton Chico, New Mexico — a small village that shaped the fierce, faith-filled woman she would become. At just 16 years old, she made the bold and courageous decision to leave home and venture to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she would build her life, her home, and her family. That early act of bravery was just the first glimpse of the tenacity that would define her for the rest of her life.

Virginia raised nine children, largely on her own, and she did it with a strength that left a lasting impression on every one of them. It was not always easy but she never wavered. She was determined that her children would grow up to be independent, capable, and hardworking. She made sure of it by finding unique and individual ways to teach every one of them valuable life lessons.

She was a woman of remarkable skill and quiet resourcefulness. She always wanted her kids to have a house to come home to and she always found a way to make it happen. She maintained her homes on her own. She taught herself to do oil changes. She was a gifted, self-taught seamstress and upholsterer. If she decided the house needed remodeling, the family might come home to find a bedroom wall torn down and Virginia already hard at work building a new one in the living room. She never waited for someone else to do what she could figure out herself.

Virginia loved to cook, and her kitchen was the heart of the home. She had a deep love for hot red and green chile — the hotter the better — and her holiday cooking was legendary. For weeks leading up to Christmas, the family would gather to make many of the holiday staples, like tamales, cookies, and posole together - quickly becoming a family tradition and making some of the most cherished memories her children will continue to carry. The holidays were always a big deal in Virginia's home, filled with food, family, music, and light. When her children were young, she would pile everyone into the car and drive around looking at Christmas lights — a simple activity that meant the world.

She loved to dance. She would put on music and dance with her kids right there in the kitchen, and she was always ready and waiting to be someone's dance partner at every wedding. You could see the joy rise in her every time she stepped onto the dance floor. It was one of the few places where she could truly be herself.

Virginia was a private person. She was not one for grand displays of affection, and she was not always what you would call warm in the traditional sense. But when she showed you love, you knew it was real. It was genuine in a way that meant something, because it was never given carelessly.

Her faith was the foundation of everything. She was deeply devoted to God and her church community, and she poured herself into it. She studied her Bible daily for hours. She raised her children in that community. And in time, she began teaching scripture classes, sharing with others everything she had learned and come to love. Her faith was not performative — it was the quiet, unshakable core of who she was.

In the end, it was simple: God and family were the two things Virginia Vigil lived for — in that order, as she herself would want it said.

As the family mourns her passing, she is survived by seven of her nine children and the many lives she shaped simply by living the way she did — with courage, faith, resilience, and love.
