Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Tommy Sumruld, a beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.  Tommy left us on January 8, 2026, surrounded by his brother Carl, his daughters and grandchildren at the age of 85.  He joined his beloved wife Elizabeth who passed 169 days earlier in July 2025.

He was born in Lovington, New Mexico and lived in the Albuquerque most his life.  He served in the United States Navy, where he met the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Elizabeth.  Together they raised four daughters, Christina, Lisa, Patricia and Dorthy, who loved and cherished their dad to the end.  His grandchildren, Thomas, Alexandria, Armando, Abie, Serena, Eric and Amy will remember his gentle loving nature and the pure joy they experience in the Sumruld home.

Anything that a man could learn and accomplish was within the reach of Tommy Sumruld.  Raised and taught as a carpenter, educated as an electrician and self-taught as a master street rod builder, gardener, there was nothing Tommy couldn't conquer.  His ingenuity, creativity and true genius made him known to all as "The Professor".  He worked at PNM for 28 years in substation and relay construction and maintenance before enjoying a long and happy retirement building cars.  He was a core member of the Albuquerque Over the Hill Gang car club, and was inducted into the New Mexico Street Rod Hall of Fame.

Tommy and Elizabeth will be laid to rest together at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, in a private family service.
