Obituary

Tillie Herrera Brummell, 88, passed away with her children by her side on August 6, 2024. She was born in Manzano, New Mexico on January 27, 1936.

Tillie was preceded in death by her husband, Beau Brummell; son, Patrick Brummell; father, Antonio Herrera; mother, Manuelita Herrera; brothers, Augustine Herrera, Robert Herrera, Tony Herrera and Eddie Herrera.

She is survived by her children, Daniel Brummell (Monica) and Cathy Coleman;  grandchildren, Shayla Wallis (Chris), Bo Coleman, Trey Coleman and Bonnie Palacio and by her great grandchildren and the apples of her eye, Isla, Harlow, Ezmeralda and Shayla's second baby due soon.

Tillie graduated from Mountainair High School in 1955. She worked for the Department of Energy for 30 years where she then became the sole proprietor of Tillie's Inn in Mountainair, New Mexico for 20 years.

Tillie had the most amazing life and lived it to the fullest.  She personally met 3 United States Presidents, 5 New Mexico Senators, 4 New Mexico Governors and a United States Speaker of the House.  Tillie was very involved and passionate in politics.  She was the driving force in many Gubernatorial, Senator and Mayoral campaigns and was the Democratic Chairperson for Torrance County and a city council member in Mountainair, New Mexico.

She loved to travel and enjoyed a wonderful trip throughout Italy where she saw Pope John Paul II in person at the Vatican in Rome.

Family was everything to Tillie. She loved her 11 brothers and sisters with all her heart and adored her 30 nieces and nephews.

Tillie was a trailblazer and a force to be reckoned with. She fiercely encouraged education and worked for the empowerment and advancement of Hispanics and women.

She lived for her children and was extremely proud of their accomplishments.  She encouraged them to serve others and was thrilled that her son Danny was a teacher; Pat served in the military and Cathy followed in her footsteps as a federal employee.
The highlight of her life was watching all her grandchildren participate in their activities including dance, wrestling, football, basketball, cheer, baseball and track and field.  She never missed a function and was their #1 fan. She proudly wore maroon and gold to support them at all their functions. Go Vikes!

Tillie was a strong, determined, loving, kind and amazing person.  She was never afraid to speak her mind, always worked for those less fortunate and stood up for those who had been wronged and treated unjustly.
She was the bell of the ball, would dance the night away, drink you under the table and tell you where to go, with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other.

She will be dearly missed but NEVER forgotten.
