Sister Rose
Urban
Aug 2, 1930 — Jul 4, 2023
Albuquerque
Sister Rose A Urban, CSJ. passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2023. She was born in Santa Rosa, New Mexico on August 2, 1930 and grew up there with her two brothers and sisters.
At the age of 21 Rose departed on a life-long journey, beginning in Massachusetts, at St. Joseph's Novitiate in Framingham, for training where she would be the first New Mexican to attend. Sister Rose attributed the responsibility and faithful example set by her parents and the encouragement of her family Pastor, for her religious vocation.
Sister Rose was one of three people who opened Cristo Rey School in Santa Fe, where she taught first grade for nine years. Thereafter, she returned to the Boston area, as she was one of four selected for a Mission trip to Peru to open, yet another, school. She served in Peru for eight years.
Sister Rose was then asked by Archbishop in Santa Fe to teach bilingual and multicultural classes for the students and The Santa Fe Seminary. She served six years in this teaching position which made Sister Rose the first woman on the Seminary Staff. As well, Sister Rose was also the first woman Chaplain at the Boys School in Springer, New Mexico. Initially, she wondered into what she may have gotten herself into, but she served in that capacity for fourteen years and she loved every minute of it.
Moving from Santa Fe, Sister Rose then served as Pastoral Associate in Clovis, New Mexico for 12 years, after which she retired. Following retirement, Sister Rose volunteered at St. Mary's Nursing Home and Lovelace to provide Communion to the Catholic residents and patients.
Sister Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Brijido and Elvira Urban; her brother, Robert; sisters, Mary, Edwina, Helen, Angie and Katie.
Sister Rose is lovingly survived by her sister, Amelia Urban "Mickie" of Albuquerque; brother, Billy Urban and wife Vivian of Santa Rosa; many cherished nieces and nephews who had a special place in her heart; as well as other family members and treasured friends who loved and will miss her greatly.
Services will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 439 S. 3rd St. Santa Rosa, NM. on Friday, July 14, 2023. A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 am. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am with Fr Sotero Sena, Celebrant.
Interment will follow at the Saint Joseph Cemetery with Jimmy Urban, Andy Urban, David Urban, Brian Urban, Zach Campos and Marty Ulibarri, serving as pallbearers.
If desired memorial contributions can be made to the St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church.
