Robert Arthur Knoebel

1934 - 2025

Robert Arthur Knoebel, beloved father, husband, professor, researcher, writer, avid hiker, a Baha'i and a lover of classical and jazz music, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.  He was 91 years old.
Arthur, as he was known, is survived by two daughters, Georgina Knoebel and Crystal Knoebel Western Ford; two stepdaughters, Sylva Prejean Murdoch and Stefanie Prejean Miller; two grandchildren, Anastasia Western and Zachary Luallen; his sister Beryl Lundberg; six step grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  His wife and the mother to his two daughters, Patricia Ray Knoebel, preceded Arthur in death and they were happily married for 47 years.
In his college years, he developed his love of music and mathematics.  He performed in several jazz bands, and his musical talent included being able to play the saxophone, recorder, piano, flute, bassoon, baritone and oboe.  After college, he traveled extensively around the world which was full of incredible experiences for him.  While getting his Ph.D. in mathematics from UC Berkeley, he traveled and discovered the beauty of the Southwest, and once he fell in love with the deserts, canyons and mountains, he decided to settle in Las Cruces, NM where he raised his family and taught as a mathematics professor at NMSU for 28 years.  He published several books as well as several articles in various mathematical and scientific journals.  He was active in the Baha'i community, and his puns and unforgettable sense of humor as well as his peace-loving, gentle nature impacted many people in his life.  Arthur is greatly loved and missed by his entire family.
The memorial service will be held at the Albuquerque Baha'i Center, 5700 Ouray Rd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120, on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 3:00p.m.  Donations, in memory of Arthur, may be made to the Albuquerque Baha'i Fund or the Baha'i National Fund.
