Lyle Walter Holmen

Maurice ("Mo") and Berniece ("Bee") welcomed the birth of Lyle Holmen in Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 13, 1959. He was the second youngest of six children.

Lyle attended Valley High School where he joined the swim and football teams, and played the trombone. Following his graduation in 1977, Lyle played trombone with Continental Singers & Orchestra for four consecutive summers, giving him the opportunity to see much of the U.S. and South America while spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through music.

Inspired by his father who was a bomber pilot in World War II, Lyle obtained his pilot's license and a degree in Aviation Mechanics from LeTourneau College in Longview, Texas in 1983. Lyle served as a flight instructor and commuter and cargo pilot for Mesa Airlines and Four Seasons Aviation.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Lyle embarked on a second career in real estate and home remodeling. Working with his brothers and his father, Lyle successfully flipped and sold numerous homes.

Lyle's true passion however, was history. Lyle earned his Master's degree from the University of Nebraska and American Military University. His Master's Thesis, "Kit Carson: Indian Killer or Dime Store Novel Hero?" showcased Lyle's extensive knowledge of complex interactions in the American West. He taught American and World history at the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and taught internationally in Stockport, England. He retired in 2023.

Lyle, a humble and deeply spiritual man, is remembered for his service to others. Lyle volunteered as an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor and cared for family members during their time of need. Whether he was teaching pilots in the air, students in the classroom, or explaining what the Pilgrims actually ate during the first Thanksgiving at the dinner table, Lyle always had a ready answer, a kind smile, and a patient heart.

Lyle is survived by his son, Luke; his daughter, Megan and by his siblings, Dale, Mark, Kay, Ross, and Glen.  He is profoundly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Hope Church, 4710 Juan Tabo NE, ABQ, NM. on Saturday May 24th , 2025 at 1:00pm, where all are welcome to attend.
