Lionel R Ortega

July 30, 1954 – December 23, 2024

Lionel Ruben Ortega, 70 years old, passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico Monday, December 23, 2024, from complications due to dementia. However, the disease did not temper his big personality as he kept his caregivers, friends, and family on their toes with his jokes and dance moves.

Lionel, a highly accomplished runner, was named All-American in both cross-country and track at UNM and came in 2nd place in the La Luz Trail Race twice. After college he competed as a professional marathoner with a 2:14 PB and qualified for the Olympic trials in 1976. He followed his running career with a 25 year business career first at Nike, then at Adidas, working across Korea, Mexico, Brazil and Panama. Upon retirement Lionel enjoyed traveling, enjoying time with the friends he made all over the world and staying active with lots of walking.

Lionel is survived by his two children, Lionel and Marisol; three sisters, Rachel, Isabelle and Annette; as well as his two nephews, Joshua and Fredrick.

His memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th ST. NW., ABQ., NM. on Tuesday January 14, 2025 at 10:30am.
