It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Leonard Montoya on September 20, 2026, in Bernalillo, New Mexico.

Born on September 16, 1956, in Bernalillo, New Mexico, Leonard spent his life rooted in the place where he was born. He lived in Arizona for part of his life then moved back to his hometown.

He will be remembered by those who knew him for the simple pleasures that brought meaning to his days and for the care he showed to others. He had a heart of gold and loved helping people, and that generosity is part of how many will remember him.

Leonard found joy in planting and caring for his garden, hiking and picking piñon in the mountains, fishing at the lake, and riding his bike. He enjoyed being outside in nature, whether exploring, working in the yard, or simply sitting by his garden. He was an old school soul and also liked listening to his vinyl records, cooking, telling jokes, and making people laugh.

He is survived by his daughter Brenda and son-in-law Israel; his son Leonard and daughter-in-law Nicole; his grandson Junior and great-grandson Eric; his sisters Rita and Georgina; his brother Gene; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abran and Margarita Montoya; his daughter Amanda; his sisters Olivia and Cecilia; and his brothers Leo, Paul, Nick, and Ritchie.

Leonard leaves behind a memory grounded in kindness, humor, and a love of the outdoors. His presence in the garden, in the mountains, by the lake, and on his patio will be remembered by those who shared in those moments with him.

He will be missed dearly.
