Kenneth
Powell
Aug 13, 1958 — Feb 6, 2025
Albuquerque
Ken Powell passed away on February 6, 2025, after a battle with lung cancer. He was originally from Centralia, WA, where he excelled in academics and athletics (Go Tigers!). He went on to attend the University of Puget Sound, where he played football and met his wife Lori under circumstances that remain somewhat dubious.
After graduation, Ken worked for AirSpares out of Tacoma for 20 years. He lived in Gig Harbor, WA where he golfed, coached his children's sports teams, and took great pride in creating a "hang out house" for his kids and their friends — complete with personalized chip cabinets, a fridge stocked with pop, and memorable inner tubing adventures on the Puget Sound. More than anything, Ken's mission was to give his children and grandchildren every opportunity he could — determined to give them a childhood even better than his own.
In 2003, Ken and family relocated to Albuquerque, NM, curious to discover whether the sky came in colors other than gray. There, he and Lori built two businesses together, transitioning from airplane spare parts to construction equipment — a field in which Ken had the remarkable ability to recall thousands of part numbers entirely from memory. His routes took him across New Mexico, and he will be mourned by colleagues and Diet Coke purveyors along the way.
In Albuquerque, Ken and Lori also found joy in supporting local high school and college sports and adding to their collection of oddball chihuahuas. In quieter moments, he enjoyed homebrewing, boating, crafting the perfect pun for any occasion, and dragging Lori to more Jackson Browne concerts than she can count. But perhaps his greatest joy of all was his grandchildren — Lienna, Siara, Alessa, Ruben, and Kieran — who were the true light of his life. To them, he was simply "Boog," and being that for them was everything.
Ken is survived by his wife Lori; daughters Lynsey (Adam) Mannix, Kelsey (Rich) Bailey, and Whitney (Jeremy) Monjure; son Mac (Lily) Powell; grandchildren Lienna, Siara, Alessa, Ruben, and Kieran; his mother Marie; and sisters Sue, Debbie, and Jackie. He was preceded in death by his father Jack Gilligan, stepfather Ron Powell, and brothers Richard Parsons and Mike Gilligan.
