SERVICE TIMES HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES

Jose Roberto "Bobby" Gomez, age 75, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2024.  He was born in Las Vegas, NM on May 30, 1949, to Leopoldo and Maria Gomez.  The family would eventually relocate to Albuquerque, NM after living in Las Vegas and Santa Fe, NM.

Bobby attended Albuquerque High School where he graduated in 1968.  Shortly after graduating he would be drafted to the Vietnam War where he served from March 12, 1969, to March 1, 1971.  His rank in the US Army in 1969 was Specialist 4 Th. Class (SP4).  This rank was one step above private first class.  He then become a corporal which was higher than his specialist rank and requires a leadership role.   His job description was to guard oil and gas pipelines to try to prevent he Vietnamese from rupturing or stealing the product.  Many times, he had to watch from high towers up to 40 feet that may have contributed to his knee issues that caused him much discomfort over the years.

He traveled to Germany, Ft. Bliss, TX, and parts of Arizona where he was stationed.  As a youngster he loved to read comics which he had a countless supply of which would have been worth a fortune today.  He also loved his pigeons that he had trained to be homers.  He worked various Jobs throughout his life.  He worked at the mines in Grants, NM and at the Bunny Bread factory.  He also worked for Albuquerque Public Schools and did some big rig trucking.

He was preceded in death by his late wife of nearly 50 years, Yolanda Yvonne Gomez; mother-in-law Ms. Virginia Varela; brother-in-law Jerry Varela; Father Leopoldo Gomez; brother Blas Jerome "Jerry" Gomez, Michael Gomez and niece Victoria M. Tsosie Gomez and many other friends and relatives.

He is survived by his daughter Michelle Barraza and husband Antonio; son Jose R. Gomez Jr.; 3 grandchildren Steven Armijo, Monique Armijo and Damien Martinez; mother Maria M. Gomez; brother Freddy and Rose Gomez and Pablo "Elias" Gomez; sister Alicia and Rudy Gallegos; sister Maria Angelina "Angie" Hernandez; brother and compadre Richard A. "Tony" Gomez and Anna Lucero; sister Kristina "Tina" Jeanette Gutierrez; 3 God sons Mario Gomez, Joseph I. Gomez and Ernie Gomez; and countless nephews, nieces and cousins.

His celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, with a viewing starting at 10:00 a.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 11:00 a.m. and the Mass of Resurrection to be celebrated at 11:30 a.m.   A reception will follow at the Parish Hall, 309 Stover Ave. SW from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. with military honors.
