Obituary

Jose Orlando Lobato, age 84, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jose was born on August 24, 1941, in Cuba, New Mexico. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before dedicating his life to education and public service. Jose worked for Albuquerque Public Schools for 33 years, serving in a variety of roles including teacher, counselor, and principal. Throughout his career, he made a lasting impact on the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues through his leadership, wisdom, and dedication.


Jose was known for his intelligence, sharp wit, and wonderful sense of humor. He had a deep love for sports, particularly Notre Dame football and UNM Lobo basketball, and was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course with family and friends. He also loved music, and these passions brought him great joy throughout his life.

He shared nearly 25 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Elizabeth. Jose was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished his family deeply.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his son, Albert Lobato and wife Rosanne Lobato; his stepson, Paul Garcia and partner Justin; and his stepdaughter, Angela Banks and husband Kevin Banks. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher and wife Jocelyn, Andrew, Matthew, Kane, and Mystica; and his great-grandchildren, Gabby, Athens, and Raymond. He is further survived by his siblings, Dorothy Trujillo; Angie Montano and husband Lawrence; Larry Lovato and wife Juanita; Irene Varela; and David Lovato. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Lobato, and his parents, Juanita Archibeque and Eliseo Lobato.


Jose will be remembered for his kindness, his intellect, and the laughter he brought to those around him. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, both within his family and throughout the community he so faithfully served.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on April 10, 2026, at Sagebrush Church Northeast, 7500 Montgomery Blvd NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his in Jose's name.
