Obituary

John D. Ray passed from this life on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at his home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, after an extended illness.  He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family.

J.D., as friends most often called him, was born in Pampa, Texas, on September 7, 1934. He lived a life of service and adventure as a pastor, a pilot, and a consummate storyteller. Until the very end, he took great joy in laughing, playing with his great grandchildren, and making life fun for everyone around him.  In May of 2021, he married his best friend, Janie, and they made a commitment to spend whatever time he had left enjoying one another's company, singing, and laughing together. Though their time together was short, they grew in love and faith together.

J.D leaves behind his wife, Janie Downing Ray; his three surviving children,  Joanie Monroy of Rio Rancho, Jeff Ray of Toney, Alabama, and James Ray, along with his brother, Larry Ray, of Pampa, Texas.  Also remaining are his ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father, John and Bonnie Ray of Pampa Texas, and his three sisters, Allene Sharp, Nita Dedmon, and Jean Nutter.  Also gone before him is the mother of his children, Eula Ray, and his eldest son, John N. Ray.
