JOHN EDWARD HUGHES

June 19,1937 – July 17, 2024

Born in Missouri, John and his parents moved to Albuquerque when he was 6. He graduated from Highland High School then joined the Navy Reserves, with his mother's permission when he was 17.

After returning home from his tour of the world, John began his lifelong career in the New Mexico highway industry. Soon, John and John Way founded J-H Supply Company and they grew it into a successful business, including introducing New Mexicans to the dreaded orange barrels as they helped build Interstate 40. John always said he had the best business partner in the world.

The next 30 years John worked for several giants in the industry; among them are Tom Growney Equipment, Corn Construction, LaFarge and Mountain States Constructors. He worked till he was 80 and always mentored many young men in the industry.

John worked hard and played hard. When he got interested in horses, his family followed. John was the President of the New Mexico Appaloosa Association and the greater New Mexico Cutting Horse Association.

Jesus Christ was John's Lord and Savior. Once he found Bible Study Fellowship he spent 30 years delving into understanding the Bible, even teaching classes to children for a number of years. He also helped serve meals and sharing his faith with the homeless through First United Methodist Church.

In 1959 John married Mary Jo Denzler and they raised two children, Debbie and Johnny.  Then in 1988 he married Bonnie Foster.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward Hughes and Helen Hughes and by his son, Johnny. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Debbie; grandchildren, Amber and Kody and 5 great grandchildren.

The family would like to sincerely thank Roadrunner Hospice and Avista Senior Living for the compassionate and loving care they gave John in his final 3 months.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 315 Coal Ave.  SW, Albuquerque New Mexico, on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 10:00 am.
