JO ANN (MCPROUD) THOMPSON

July 18, 1932 – April 29, 2026

Jo Ann Thompson was born July 18, 1932 in Santa Fe, New Mexico to J. Robert and Margaret McProud.  The family moved to Pecos, Texas (PAY-cuss, not PEH-cos) when she was two years old. Although she was proud of growing up in Texas, she swore she would one day return to New Mexico. As a young girl, Jo Ann took ballet and loved the work of Vera Zorina and Maria Tallchief.  She was active in Girl Scouts and was in the Pecos Eagle Band, becoming Drum Major her senior year.

She worked as a secretary for many different businesses – oil and gas, insurance, and legal - but her favorite job was "mom". She poured herself into that role as our Girl Scout troop leader for ten years – leading, guiding, and loving a group of girls from noisy eight-year olds to moody teenagers. She was also active with our Girls Fast-pitch Softball Association in Pecos – also for ten years.  She never missed a band concert, science fair, interscholastic competition, or any other school activity.  She always said that her biggest accomplishment was her daughter, Joni, and was so happy to be introduced as "Joni's Mom."

In 1992, Jo Ann was able to realize her dream and return to New Mexico. She loved the Sandias, Balloon Fiesta, all the critters in the backyard – and she loved people. Jo Ann was a tireless greeting-card sender. She was creative and artistic. Making hand-crafted items for friends at every opportunity, she embraced "bling" like no other. She was my best friend, my playmate, my co-adventurer, and my biggest cheerleader. She will be remembered for her loving ways, big hugs, quick smile, kind and generous heart, strong faith, positivity, and resilience.

Jo Ann is survived by her daughter, Joni Olivia (spouse Mary Irene Urvanejo). Almost everyone she met, she embraced as family. We are deeply grateful for the kindness of friends, family and all of her medical professionals, including the team at Roadrunner Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at the Los Poblanos La Quinta Cultural Center, 4803 Rio Grande Blvd, Albuquerque, NM on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at 11:00 with reception to follow.  In lieu of flowers, Jo Ann requested that donations be made to Roadrunner Food Bank https://rrfb.org , or to your favorite charity.

Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day.
