In Loving Memory of

Geraldine "Jeri" Maes (Sanchez)

October 6, 1947 – July 21, 2025

With profound love and sadness, we announce the passing of Geraldine "Jeri" Maes, who left this world peacefully in her hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a courageous journey with cancer. Born on October 6, 1947, Jeri lived a life full of heart, purpose, and devotion to those she loved.

She was a woman of many talents and roles — a dedicated schoolteacher, skilled accountant, graceful ballroom dance instructor, and someone who was known to win a time or two at the casino. But above all, Jeri was a devoted mother, proud grandmother, loving sister, and vibrant member of her community. She radiated warmth and joy, making fast friends everywhere she went with her bright smile and genuine heart.

Jeri was a woman of deep faith, a believer in Christ who found comfort in Scripture and the power of prayer. In her final season, she drew strength from the words of Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Kenneth Sandoval, and by several cherished siblings. She is survived by her children: Ronald Sandoval, Deanna Newsom (husband Don), and Joseph Maes (wife Holly Servin-Maes). She leaves behind many grandchildren who adored her:

– Kenneth's children: Vanessa Sandoval, Chris Sandoval

– Ronald's children: RJ Sandoval, Reagan Sandoval, Brittany Sandoval, Shana Sandoval, Janelle Asturias, Cameron Sandoval

– Deanna's children: Jade Walsh, Tiffany Tautenhahn, Brandon Vanlandingham

– Joseph's children: Justen Maes, Morgan Maes

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Margaret, Dolores and Severo (Jr.)  She is survived by her sisters Dorothy and Virginia, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Jeri's love of golden oldies, Doo-wop, and Chicano classics often brought rhythm into her home — and when she danced, the room followed her lead. Her energy, kindness, and authenticity touched countless lives, and her legacy will live on in the stories we tell, the music we play, and the prayers we offer.

*UPDATE * The Celebration of Life for Jeri Maes will be held in the Chapel of Direct Funeral Services Mortuary, 2919 4th St NW. Albuquerque, NM 87107, on Friday, September, 5, 2025 at 10:30am.

The burial will follow at San Jose de Armijo Cemetery, 2957 Arenal Rd SW. Albuquerque, NM 87121.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of New Mexico Cancer Center or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, causes close to her heart.
