Gerald H. Atencio

Gerald Henry Atencio was born July 13, 1957 in Farmington, New Mexico, and was raised in Albuquerque.  He passed away on Friday, April 26th, 2024. Gerald was the son of Elias and Frances Atencio.

After years of battling addiction, he found the strength to break free and turn his life around. He was a great provider for his family and built their home with his own hands. He worked for Yellow Freight and was an active member of the Teamsters Local 492, advocating for fair wages and benefits during strikes.

Although a mechanic to most, Gerald was a master craftsman at heart. He worked on various projects that made him happy and was multitalented working with wood, and metal. He loved tinkering, building gadgets, and was skilled at rebuilding classic cars and trucks. He was always helping family and friends. He enjoyed spending time in Blanco, New Mexico where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and riding ATVs with his family.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, and by his siblings, Delia Garcia (Ronnie), Robert "Bobby" Atencio, and Daniel "Juni" Atencio.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie Atencio; son, Jonathan Atencio (Crystal);  daughter, Francine McGuire (Ty);  his brother, Raymond Atencio (Kathy) and sisters Martha Valencia (Steve), Velma Atencio, and Yolanda Atencio. Gerald was a cherished grandfather to Alejandro Atencio, Catalina Atencio, Eli McGuire, Faire Bross, and Wright Bross, who brought immense joy to his life. He is leaving behind many nephews, nieces, and cousins whom he loved.

His funeral services will be held at Calvary Church of Albuquerque, 4001 Osuna Rd. NE.  Albuquerque, NM 87109, on Tuesday, May 14 , 2024 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow from noon until 2:00 pm at the HUB.

A celebration of life will be held on his birthday, Saturday, July 13th, 2024 starting at 3:00 pm at 176 Road 4599, Blanco, NM 87412. Gerald's life and legacy will be honored by those who knew and loved him.
