Gary Lee
Sandstrom
Aug 9, 1950 — Oct 31, 2025
Rio Rancho
Gary Sandstrom, Sr., passed away on October 31,2025. His life was a testimony to his kindness, generosity and caring for the communities of which he was a part. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother, numerous cousins and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Linda Spitz Sandstrom; his amazing sister Judy Sandstrom (Dick) Owen; his remarkable sister-in-law, Carol Spitz; incredible nieces and nephews and other extended family members; and trusted friends.
Born and raised in Minnesota, Gary and his wife Linda moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico in 1978. He continued his education receiving a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degrees, and his EMT certification. He accomplished these goals while employed at Albuquerque TV-I (CNM) and various hospitals working with several medical services. For all the years Gary lived in New Mexico, he was a well-respected and beloved member of Congregation Albert's Jewish community and its Brotherhood, of which he served as President.
When he retired after 25 years at TV-I, Gary worked as a firefighter for the City of Rio Rancho. Then he spent much of his time in Creede, CO. He loved being a part of this close-knit community where he enjoyed quality fishing, playing golf, and volunteering. "Mr. Gary" was a beloved addition to Creede's school staff and students. He also loved the strong personal support he found through AA, where he celebrated twenty years of sobriety.
Gary maintained his many friendships for decades because of his loving personality. He took care of his relationships and people gravitated to him. He was surrounded by close almost "family-like" ties, that sustained him throughout his life and gave him strength during his final illness. His immediate family thanks you for this support.
