On October 13, 2024, at 3:17 PM, Fela Chávez Lucero passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Albuquerque surrounded by her children. She was 94 years old. Fela is survived by her daughters Theresa Judy Lucero Heiss, husband Steven and their daughter, Elena; Maria Cristina Lucero, children Michael C. Garcia and Maria F. Garcia; son Matthew A. Lucero, Kimberly and their daughter Kassandra; grandchildren, Sheila M. Wilkins, husband Robert and their children, Sean, his spouse and their children Charile and Thatcher; and Joey, and Amber; Marcos C. Lucero; Tanya M. Casaus and her children Gabriel and Alex; Adella M. Solano, husband Eric and their children Miles Medina and Madison; Manuel C. Lucero V, wife Heather and their children Luke and Lainey Lucero.
Fela was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel C. Lucero; their daughters, Clara M. Lucero and Martha R. Lucero Fletcher; their son, Manuel C. Lucero IV, and by her mother, Mary A. Romero.
She was born in Los Duranes at her maternal grandparents' home, just up the road from the mission church, grew up on Los Anayas, went to Los Duranes school (the old one), walked up Los Anayas every day to catch the bus to go St. Vincent's Academy on 6th and Lomas, celebrated her wedding at San Felipe church and then processed with the wedding party down Los Anayas to the wedding reception at her maternal grandparents' home at 2220 Los Anayas (now 3017 Los Anayas), she and Manuel were married for 71 years; her three oldest children were born on Los Anayas at home, raised her six kids and lived there until she went to a memory care residence 5 1/2 years ago.
She loved and was dedicated to God, family, church, and community that would be repeated over and over throughout her life because this love and dedication came from the very essence of who she was.
May you rest in the arms of the Lord who formed you from the dust of the earth. May holy Mary, the angels and all the saints welcome you now that you have gone forth from this life. May Christ who was crucified for you bring you freedom and peace. May Christ who died for you admit you into his garden of paradise.
A procession took place down Los Anayas to the Mission Church San Jose de Los Duranes located at 2110 Los Luceros Rd NW, Albuquerque, NM. A rosary was recited prior to the Funeral Mass held on November 15, 2024. The interment followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery located at 1900 Edith Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM. A small reception was held at the home where Manuel and Fela shared.
