Evelyn "Lynnie"
Wienecke
Aug 9, 1940 — Dec 1, 2023
Bernalillo
Evelyn "Lynnie" Wienecke- Lynnie left for parts unknown on Friday, December 1, 2023. She had a full, wonderful life - blessed by family, friends and travel, but she finally ran out of breath due to COPD coupled with COVID.
Lynnie grew up in an Army family, moving around the Eastern Seaboard, Japan and Okinawa, thus beginning her travel addiction. Teased for being a perennial student, Lynnie started college at Northwestern then transferred to the University of New Mexico in 1960. At UNM, she earned both a Bachelor's of Fine Art (BFA) and Master's of Art (MA) degrees. Lynnie enjoyed a career first teaching school, then working for an educational research firm, then the Department of Energy, from which she retired in 1996. A highlight of her federal career were her years at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History (then called the National Atomic Museum).
Travel was an important feature while working and after retirement. She and her life partner of 45 years, Oscar George traveled the world, visiting over 70 countries, enjoying ski and beach vacations with friends and family. As COPD left less energy for adventure travel, she found cruising suited her travel needs perfectly. Unfortunately, COVID brought cruising abruptly to an end: four planned cruises for 2020 were canceled.
Art of all kinds remained central to Lynnie's heart and soul. A scholarship has been established in her name at UNM's College of Fine Arts. Please consider donating to the Lynnie Wienecke Scholarship Fund, University of New Mexico Foundation, 700 Lomas Blvd. NE, Two Woodward Center, Albuquerque, NM 87107. Our heartfelt thanks to Presbyterian Hospice and Beehive Assisted Living for making Lynnie's last days more comfortable.
