Elizabeth Sumruld "Liz"

September 24, 1942 – July 23, 2025

Elizabeth "Liz" Sumruld passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Born on September 24, 1942, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Liz's life was defined by courage, creativity, and unwavering devotion.

Just three days after graduating St. Mary's High School, "Betsy" as her family called her boarded a bus with purpose and determination—joining the United States Navy and beginning a journey that would shape her life forever. She was extremely proud of her service, she always got her Veteran's discount, and she inspired other women to serve in the military.

While stationed in San Diego, she also met fellow sailor Tommy Sumruld from Lovington, New Mexico. Their connection blossomed into 63 years of loving marriage, built on shared adventure, mutual respect, and an enduring bond.  Liz and Tommy enjoyed 30 joyful years of retirement, traveling the Southwest with their beautiful street rod creations and the renowned Over the Hill Gang car club. As Vice President and the club's spirited "sparkplug," Liz infused every road trip and gathering with enthusiasm, warmth, and laughter.

She was an artist in every sense—expressing her creativity through her artwork, her home, and the way she loved. Liz was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother to four daughters—Christina, Lisa, Patricia, and Dorthy—and a deeply beloved Nana.

Her grandchildren—Thomas, Alexandria, Armando, Abbie, Serena, Eric, and Amy—will forever cherish memories of her love for Disneyland and the unforgettable magic she created during Christmas Eve celebrations.  Her home was a haven of wonder and joy, but she never wavered in her commitment to education, family and hard work.

Most profoundly, Liz broke the cycle of poverty and hardships, creating a family and life of beauty, stability, and inspiration. Her legacy is one of strength, grace, and transformation—an inheritance that lives on through the generations she touched.

A private family memorial service has taken place.
