Obituary

It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Derrick Ray Benavidez, beloved son, grandson, cousin and friend. Derrick was born on June 27, 2007, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and left us far too soon on April 27, 2026, at the age of 18.

Derrick was the cherished son of Ramona Benavidez and Crystal Vanchalk and grandson to Annie Benavidez, who Derrick fondly called "mommy," and Sisto Gonzales. Derrick's life was further graced by the love of his Nina and Nino, Andrea and Guillermo Rios, as well as the many cousins who filled his life with laughter and warmth.

Derrick was a bright young man who achieved his GED. A testament to his perseverance and dedication. He had a passion for music and a talent for writing and rapping, using his words to express the depth of his thoughts and emotions. Derrick found joy in playing basketball, a sport he loved to share with his friends and family. His presence was a source of comfort and happiness to those around him, as he was known for his funny and silliness.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Derrick's life on Monday, May 18, 2026, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, located on 820 Broadway Albuquerque, NM. The service will begin at 8:00 AM, a time chosen to honor the special connection Derrick had with his family and friends.

In this time of sorrow, Derrick's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support and condolences. They find solace in knowing that Derrick touched the lives of so many. As they bid him farewell, they share this special message: "Derrick will truly be missed, this is not a goodbye it's just until we meet again we love you diggy, sugar boy and dare bear."

Derrick's memory will forever be a beacon of light to those who knew him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love of his family and grandfather "Dad" who awaits him in heaven.

Pallbearers will be Sisto Gonzales, Guillermo Rios, Tatianna Benavidez, Christopher Cordova, Edward Hulland and Rasheed Farqiyev.   Honorary pallbearers will be Patrick Moya, Xavier Rios and Michael Moya.
