Cole Jacob Phillips, a lifelong resident of the East Mountains in New Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at the age of 21. At the time of his passing, he was living in Minot, North Dakota, while attending Minot State University. Born on March 13, 2004, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cole spent his childhood surrounded by adventure—whether through sports, hunting, family trips, or dreaming big. These experiences shaped him into the remarkable young man he became.
Cole graduated with honors from East Mountain High School in 2022 and was set to receive a business degree from Minot State University in May. Known for his skill on the baseball field throughout his school years, Cole will also be remembered for his compassionate nature, strong work ethic, gentle demeanor, and deep love for his family.
His kindness, politeness, and enthusiasm for life brought joy to those around him. A serious reader with a sharp mind, Cole could strike up a meaningful conversation with anyone. He had a unique ability to connect with people and was especially devoted to supporting his family, often checking in on their well-being. Cole excelled in nearly every area of life and was committed to maintaining his physical health and fitness.
A driven and perfection-oriented individual, Cole pursued excellence with unwavering determination. Despite his ambitious goals, he found beauty in life's simplicity, cherishing sunsets, landscapes, and the wonders of nature God created. Above all, Cole believed in living life to the fullest and savoring each moment.
Cole is survived by his father, Kevin S. Phillips, and his fiancée Shannon Rhoades of Tijeras, NM; his mother, Lynn Ann Vukonich, and stepfather Doug Johnson of Sandia Park, NM; his beloved brother, Dawson H. Phillips of Wasilla, AK; his grandmothers, Nancy Phillips of Wisconsin and Kathy Vukonich of Raton, NM; uncles, Mike Phillips and John Mark Vukonich; aunts, Jessica Phillips and Sharon Vukonich; and his cousins, Brycen and Conner Phillips. He is also mourned by other family members and numerous friends whose lives have been deeply impacted by his loss. Cole was profoundly loved and will be missed beyond measure.
A memorial service will take place at the Vista Grande Community Center, located at 15 La Madera Rd, Sandia Park, NM 87047, on Friday, March 28, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
