Barbara Page Parent

May 1, 1934 - September 6, 2024

Barbara Page Parent was born to Urbano and Adelia Zamora Page on May 1, 1934, in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in the South Valley. One of four siblings, she learned to work hard and value a hard day's work, working alongside her family at a very young age. By the age of 13, she was driving the store delivery truck in addition to stocking shelves and pumping gas at their family grocery store. In the 9th and 10th grades she attended boarding school in El Rito, New Mexico.

Barbara will be remembered as an extremely accomplished and blessed woman, doing good in both her professional and personal life. She modeled a strong work ethic and strength; always going about with an impeccable sense of humor.

At 18 she began her 20-year career in banking working her way up from teller to the first woman bank manager in New Mexico. As she worked her way up to the top, the bank realized that she had not gone to college, which was a necessity for the position she held. The bank then enrolled her at the University of New Mexico where she earned a degree from the UNM School of Business with a BA in Business Administration. She then served as an assistant vice president in addition to branch manager with the bank. After retiring from banking, she underwent a fun new adventure when she acquired and began running The Bluewater Inn in Grants, NM, which consisted of a country and western nightclub and bar, food cart venture, and motel.

In 1969 she was asked to run for the town of Atrisco's board of directors. The Atrisco Land Grant, which dated back to 1692, was one of the few intact Spanish land grants that was still in existence at that time. She became the first woman in the land grants' 300-year history to ever be elected. They then incorporated the land grant into a stock holding company, Westland Development Company. In 1989 Barbara became the President and CEO of the land development company. As progress and development abounded, she made sure to take time to preserve the petroglyphs that were discovered on Westland's land. Off to Wahington DC she went to lobby many times to maintain the Petroglyphs as federal lands. The petroglyphs remain preserved to this day. In 2006, the shareholders voted on a sale of the lands to Sun Cal Companies. As oil had been thought to be on the land, the shareholders were given oil stock in that company. There was an oil well drilled and named the Barbara Page Oil Well in her honor. There are now seven Atrisco Companies that spun out of the land grant sales.

Barbara was involved in the community as a member of Albuquerque's Economic Forum, was on the board of directors for Albuquerque's Economic Development, The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, and National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, as well as on the advisory board for Eclipse Aviation.

Barbara was beautiful both inside and outside. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched. She personally cared for her disabled son all of his life, and helped family members, friends, neighbors, employees, shareholders, the downtrodden, and even homeless passersby. She had a soft heart for the disabled. Barbara also possessed a heart of gold and a golden sense of humor and often joked with those around her. She was a guardian angel to many. A strong woman with a love of sweets and a sweetheart, full of life and love, she left this world on September 6, 2024, to be united with her sons, parents, brothers, uncles, aunts, cousins, and many loved ones. She was, to say the least, one of a kind.

She worked hard to build a beautiful world for all who were lucky enough to be a part of her life. She is survived by her husband, Charles Parent; sister, Marlene Page Luna; daughter, Charmaigne Gallegos Riehl (Edwin); granddaughters, Jenina Carriaga-Lambert and Monica Carriaga; great grandchildren, Felix Carriaga, Salvador Lambert, Bobbi Lambert, Abraham Lambert and Ruby Lambert and too many family members, friends, and co-workers to name. She was a great woman and a great example to us all. She will truly be missed.

Services will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024 at St. Viator's Catholic Church 2461 E Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89121 at 11:00 AM. Live streaming will be available. A private interment ceremony at San Jose de Armijo Cemetery in Albuquerque, New Mexico will be conducted at a future date.
